The importance of having an active spine

While we all know that being active is good for our physical and mental health, it's important to be aware that getting active and staying active can help keep your spine healthy too!

Did you know that 90% of stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated from movement of the spine?

The alignment of our spine is important, as it’s the spine that protects our spinal cord, which is a bundle of nerves that runs down the middle of your back and carries signals back and forth between your body and your brain.  If there is a disruption to this information being carried then  this may lead to symptoms, such as back and neck aches. The healthier our spines are, the healthier our body and brain will be.

The good news is that being active doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym five times a week, there are simple steps you can take to keep flexible, stretching regularly is great, as well as walking. How about taking the stairs instead of the lift, or parking further away, or less screen time?

Sitting on a wobble cushion or a yoga ball is also a good way to keep those core stomach muscles active and it'll help with your balance and tone your tummy - so you are doing your body good, even while sitting down. This is one of the reasons before getting adjusted at Summit we encourage our clients to sit on the wobble cushion to loosen the spine, making adjustments even more effective!
